4. Finish. Trim, doors, paint and the details that make it feel like part of the house.

Can I turn my basement into a legal apartment? Often, yes. Ontario allows additional units on most residential lots, but the unit has to meet the building code for things like fire separation, ceiling height, exits and windows.
